The national Veterinary services have an unprecedented responsibility to regularly ensure an effective assessment of animal health risks in today globalized world.
The importation of non-identifiable and non-traceable animals and animal products involves a certain level of disease risk to the importing country. This risk may be represented by one or several diseases, infections or infestations.
The principal aim of risk analysis is to provide importing countries with an objective and defensible method of assessing the disease risks associated with the importation of identified and traceable animals, animal products, animal genetic material, feedstuffs, biological products and pathological material.
The OIE guidelines for the identification and traceability of livestock contribute to improving the effectiveness of animal health activities management of disease outbreaks and food safety incidents, vaccination programmes, herd or flock husbandry, zoning or compartmentalisation, surveillance, early response and notification systems, animal movement controls, inspection, certification, fair practices in trade and the utilisation of veterinary drugs, feed and pesticides at farm level.
The Guidelines are ready and are regularly updated.
