AMR poses an elevated burden for human and animal health, also putting food production, food safety and the environment at risk. The main challenge refers to the lack of baseline information on the current national situation of AMR and its associated risks and gaps to define mitigation measures with a multisectoral approach, coordinated between actors from animal health, public health and the environment. In order to address AMR risk management, countries must prioritize the gaps identified.
A methodology that aims to provide a qualitative risk assessment of AMR at national level from animal production systems (terrestrial and aquatic) toward animal and human health. The methodology developed by FAO includes a tool kit based on a survey for the compilation of information, procedure for the analysis of the information obtained and the preparation of a national roadmap for the containment of AMR.
This unique methodology is extremely valuable, both for the collection of reliable and representative information on the risks of AMR in animal production systems, as well as for the development of strategies for risk management based on a multisectoral approach in the food and agriculture sector.
Additionally, the tool has allowed to:
- Strengthen the intersectoral work and analysis of AMR under the One Health approach.
- Strengthen the joint collaboration between the public and private sectors.
- Obtain an overview of AMR (and pathogen-related) risks and gaps, which are usually overlooked.
- Include AMR in the political agenda.
Although the tool has been successfully applied in 8 countries, it needs refinement for a larger scale application.
