FAO and other organizations such as WHO and OIE have supported countries develop antimicrobial resistance (AMR) national action plans (NAPs) for mitigation of inappropriate usage of antimicrobials and AMR. However, for many countries, the main challenges are the implementation of those NAPs and the lack of sustained actions.
FAO developed the Progressive Management Pathway for Antimicrobial Resistance (FAO-PMP-AMR) to help member states put their NAPs into action in terms of
raising awareness, increasing surveillance capacities; developing governance structures; and promoting the prudent use of antimicrobials. The progressive approach enables specific sectors to make step-by-step improvements toward the sustainable use of antimicrobials and management of AMR. These improvements can start as small-scale initiatives, evolve into broader actions in priority sectors and eventually develop into fully-fledged, ‘One Health’ NAPs addressing AMR in all food and agriculture sectors nationwide.
The FAO-PMP-AMR has enabled countries to assess the status of the implementation of their AMR NAPs and supported countries and specific sectors to work progressively toward the optimal and sustainable use of antimicrobials. The tool was successfully implemented in Ghana, Tunisia, Kenya, Belgium, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Saint Kitts and Nevis.
