Information scarcity is severely limiting the development and the resource management of the drylands. Lack of credible information constraints support to the livestock sector, including governments, development organizations, private sector and so on. Several attempts to collect and disseminate market information in the conventional forms have been met with quality and sustainability challenges.
Leveraging transformational technologies and growing access to mobile networks, a data collection, verification and dissemination platform has been developed for information related to pastoral production systems. Known as the KAZNET Platform, it is a Mobile application for crowdsourcing data using flexible and dynamically generated tasks (5-10 short questions are defined as tasks, which are on important market aspects such as prices, volumes, milk, livestock quality, etc. are posted on KAZNET.)
Tasks are developed on the backend with parameters on when and where the data can be collected, and the reward for doing so. The mobile application provides contributors with a menu of available tasks, their parameters, and the reward for successful submissions.
Collecting data does not require cellular coverage and all submissions are time and data stamped. A geo-fenced feature of the application ensures quality control on the data being collected, as it allows for data collection only in the specified location, as chosen by the contributors.
Tasks are approved automatically or manually by the administrator using the web-based application.
Contributors are paid frequently for their successful contributions through mobile money. Analysis and comparisons of data collected over a period of time can be accessed through an interactive dashboard. The application is freely accessible to all through Google Play Store.
The application was first piloted in 2017 in initially six markets in Northern Kenya. Since 2018, the application has been used by about 100 contributors across eleven markets through three counties in Northern Kenya. The contributors include members of the pastoral community disaggregated across gender, which include members of the Livestock Marketing Associations and County Government officials.
Observations: Over 200 market – days observed
Task Types: Livestock market operation status, livestock price & quality, volume of livestock trade, milk prices, and prices of essential food commodities
Tasks: over 20,000 submitted, over 91,000 questions on livestock markets, milk, and other commodities.
Contributors: 100 contributors including members
Marsabit, Isiolo, Samburu
The flexible nature of the application has allowed the tracking of the COVID-19 situation and its impact on the livestock markets.
The Government of Kenya is now looking at integrating KAZNET into its refined National Livestock Market Information System, as a next generation data collection process in some of the remote markets in the dryland counties, where traditional methods of data collection have proved to be challenging.
