Scaling of technologies and solutions is not linear. There are many obstacles with adoption that require a multi-faceted approach. This can include institutional issues as well as the need to bring stakeholders together to build common understanding and ensure problems are solved by different actors. This requires skill in facilitating and communicating to a range of different stakeholders to ensure buy-in, creating awareness and ensuring institutional conditions are appropriate.
ILRI has been testing and applying a number of approaches that constitute a ‘package’ of tools and methods for convening, communicating and advocating for sustainable livestock sector investments. These approaches have been tested in a number of contexts at global regional and local levels. The package of approaches include:
- Supporting the development of messages
- Facilitating and knowledge sharing amongst partner organizations (example of Nile basin program)
- Facilitating multi-stakeholder platforms and dialogues to improve co-design and partnership approaches (Link to innovation platform briefs)
- Innovative communications to share knowledge between and among farmers (Participatory video, farmer led materials, Africa RISING)
- Advocacy approaches to engage investors and policy makers (messaging, working with media, social media tools)
- Feedback loops to ensure lessons are being learned
The main impacts we have seen in such engagements include:
• Better participation and buy in from different stakeholders
• Better appreciation for how livestock contributes to sustainable development
• Coalition of actors better aligned and using similar messages
• Better feedback channels
